How to compress an image to an exact size

  1. Choose your photo (JPG, PNG or WebP).
  2. Enter the size limit the form asks for, for example 50 KB.
  3. Download the result. It is guaranteed to be under the limit when the “after” size is shown without a warning.

The tool first lowers the JPEG or WebP quality step by step, looking for the best quality that still fits. If even the lowest quality is too large, it shrinks the image dimensions and tries again.

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The image is processed by your browser on your own device. You can even turn off your internet after the page loads and the tool keeps working.

Why do forms ask for a maximum file size?

Visa, exam and government portals limit uploads to keep their systems fast. Common limits are 20 KB, 50 KB, 100 KB and 200 KB.

Will the photo lose quality?

The tool keeps the highest quality that still fits under your target. Only if that is not enough does it reduce the pixel dimensions.

Can I keep a transparent background?

JPG does not support transparency, so transparent areas become white. Choose WebP if the portal accepts it.
